Photography Equipment

Photos are an important part of any vacation. Why should your Bahamas diving vacation be any different? Underwater cameras and equipment are more affordable than ever. Most of the major manufacturers have developed simple point and shoot digital cameras that are dive-proof up to depths of 30-50 feet. In a daylight dive, these cameras are all you need to capture great snapshots of people, underwater landscape and amazing, vibrantly colored fishes.

If you already own a digital camera, another option is the purchase of an underwater housing. These housings are generally made to fit specific cameras and are available for most models. Underwater housings will vary in their depth rating. They provide a dive-proof way to take your own familiar camera along for the dive. Make certain that you test your new housing for leaks before you trust it with your camera.

If you want to go beyond snapshots, you will want an external flash. Mounted to the camera, but in a position that will light the subject at a better angle, an external flash will allow you to take photos in darker conditions. It will also allow the vibrant colors of underwater fishes to come through in the photo.

Depending upon your budget, you may want to opt for an underwater video camera for capturing all of the live action from your Bahamas diving adventure. As with the digital still cameras, manufacturers have introduced dive-proof versions of popular inexpensive digital video cameras as well as underwater housings for your current video camera.

Underwater photography is much the same as photography on dry land, with a few exceptions. The key lies in knowing your camera and its settings. Most of the time you will be shooting in low-light conditions and knowing how to quickly adjust your camera settings will keep you from missing that once in a lifetime shot. Most cameras, even the point-and-shoot type, will have a setting for adjusting the white balance. White balance is how your camera understands how to get colors right. Getting the colors right will make all the difference in accurately recording what you are shooting.

Share your experiences with friends, family, or the world! Take the time to know your camera and the equipment you choose. With your photos and videos, you will be able to enjoy the excitement and adventure of your Bahamas diving vacation over and over!
